Humans, because of ignorance of karma, think that patience is weak, not wise, and stupid. In fact, the Buddha always taught that patience is the most effective anger treatment method for you and others so that you can both be at peace.
Once the Blessed One was at Rajagaha, at Veluvana, where squirrels were raised.
The brahmin Asurindaka Bhàradvaja heard this: “The brahmin of the Bharadvaja family has left home with the Blessed One, renounced his family, and lived without family”.
Angry and displeased, he went to the Blessed One, and after arriving, spoke unkind words, spoke harshly, slandered and taunted the Blessed One.
Hearing this, the Blessed One kept silent.
Then the brahmin Asurindaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One:
O monk, you have been conquered. O monk, you have been conquered!
The Blessed One (saying a verse):
The fool thinks he wins
When speaking evil words
Who knows how to be patient?
That guy really won.
Those who are defamed
Back to defaming people
That person does evil to me
Do evil to people again.
Those who are defamed
No defamation against
He won the battle
Win for yourself for people.
He seeks benefits
For both myself and others
And the one who slandered
Self-understanding, cooling down.
Master of both
Heal yourself, cure others
The masses think it’s stupid
For not understanding the Dharma.
Hearing this, the Brahmin Asurindaka Bharadvaja said to the Blessed One: How wonderful, Venerable Gotama!… Now I take refuge in Venerable Gotama, taking refuge in the Dharma and the Sangha. May I be ordained with Venerable Gotama.

Learn to be patient
In daily life, many people have the habit of using cruel language and vulgar words to curse and insult in order to suppress and conquer the opponent. They gloated, satisfied and considered themselves a winner when the other person suffered, kept silent and did not fight or patience in the face of slurs and harsh words. That’s why the back and forth, scolding, cursing always happens from the house to the market street and many misfortunes and sorrows in life have originated here.
However, according to the wisdom of the Blessed One, the person who knows how to be silent, patient, does not scold back when he is scolded, does not slander when he is slandered by others… is the real winner. Because the fight back will lead to conflict and surely both you and the other person will suffer heavy damage. Victory in battle, according to the World-Honored One, is due to patience, avoiding unnecessary damage to life, honor and property caused by aggression and conflict. On the other hand, that patience is the most effective therapy to quench anger in the other person and awaken them to return to their hearts.
Often people regret only when it’s too late, when everything is done. Humans because of ignorance karma masked, so that patience is weak, not wise, is a fool. In fact, the Buddha always taught that patience is the most effective anger treatment method for you and others so that you can both be at peace. Therefore, our forefathers have learned from the experience of their ancestors, so they always remind posterity: “One thing is tolerated, nine things are good”.
