One day the Buddha and his disciples were on their way from town to town. Those were the early days of His Fa transmission.

Keep peace of mind in one place, nothing is not accomplished

On the way they happened to come across a lake. The Buddha and the disciples stopped, he said to one of the disciples: “I feel thirsty, please bring me some water from the lake.”

That disciple did, and when he came to the lake he saw a bullock cart crossing the lake, making the water cloudy and disturbing. The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to him to drink!”

So he returned and said to the Buddha, “Sir, the water there is very turbid, I don’t think you can drink it.” Half an hour later the Buddha told the disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obeyed and returned to the lake.

The Buddha taught that when cultivating a peaceful mind, everything is good – “The mind is at peace with all dharmas”, “The mind is single in the land, without any objection”.

This time, too, he saw that the lake was still cloudy. He went back and told the Buddha the same thing he said before. After a while, the Buddha continued to tell the disciple to return to the lake. This disciple came to the lake and found that the lake was completely clean and clear with cool water. The mud has settled and the water above the lake is drinkable. He took some water in the vase and brought it to the Buddha.

The Buddha looked at the water jug, then looked up at his disciple again and said: “You saw what you did to make the water clean, you left it as it was…and the mud settled on its own – after I have clean water to drink. So does my mind! When you’re worried, leave it alone. Give it some time and it will settle on its own. You don’t have to put in the effort to do anything to calm your mind again. It will come on its own and without any effort.”

Peace of mind in all things – Pure mind in a dignified place
