Thanks to donating blood to people I don’t know, I found out that I belong to type AB blood and changed my way of life.

The benevolent heart of the man who donated blood to save lives 76 times

In 2014, an elderly woman broke her leg and needed blood type AB for urgent surgery. She is at the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Hospital.

I happened to read a call for help on social networks: “My friend’s mother is in urgent need of surgery but the hospital has AB anemia. Brothers, sisters or friends with this blood type, please come to the hospital for testing to donate. help her.”

This hospital is where I was treated and had a similar surgery after the accident in 2012. I think about my pain in those anxious and difficult days. I think of the patient, who is about the same age as her mother in the countryside, unable to bear pain as much as we young people.

I contacted immediately, went to the hospital. Because of the compatible blood group, another friend and I were chosen to donate blood. A series of tests were conducted in one afternoon.

The operation of the patient over 60 years old was successful. She fell very badly on the stairs in the house while cleaning. We left and went back to work. It wasn’t until two weeks later that her son’s phone call told me that this gesture touched him and his family. He promised himself, from now on he will replace his mother donate blood to help other patients.

Donating blood saves lives – Bodhisattva practice from a Buddhist point of view

The amount of blood at the blood bank in Ho Chi Minh City is running out, not enough to be distributed to hospitals in the next 5 days. Due to the city’s social distancing, many blood donation plans have been cancelled. The amount of blood received in the past few days only met 20% of the requirements.

This is very disturbing information. I know that in an emergency situation, someone who needs blood cannot wait even a day. Since I just donated blood for half a month, otherwise I would go to the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Donation Center as usual.

“One person, one donation of blood and blood products can save three lives,” the doctor once explained to me. Each donor is encouraged to collect from 350 ml of blood. Conditions, they must be from 18 to 60 years old, minimum weight 42 to 45 respectively for women and men, healthy, without infectious diseases.

Blood product is a product prepared at a blood transfusion facility, consisting of one or more types of blood cells, plasma derived from whole blood or blood components. In 2020, the Hospital of Blood Transfusion – Hematology received 215,622 blood bags with a clean blood rate of over 98%.

In Ho Chi Minh City, 40.63% of donated blood was donated by first-time donors. Repeat blood donation rate is over 43%.

In 2021, we need 220,000 blood bags. That is, at least 2% of the population in Ho Chi Minh City must participate in voluntary blood donation.

The city is seriously short of blood. Donate blood, but also to save ourselves in the future. Because once you donate blood, you get a free blood transfusion when you have to stay in the hospital later.

In fact, when donating blood, the donor is considered to have a health check. Donated blood will be renewed in a few days, according to hematologists. New blood will be better for your health.

Once, the doctor pointed to a 20-liter water bottle nearby and told me: “I’ve donated more than 16 liters, almost equal to that water bottle.” Although I have undergone 51 blood donations, I am still healthy. I follow a vegetarian diet, go to the gym, jog, cycle regularly. I feel that every time I donate blood to someone in need, I am better physically and mentally.

The blood problem of Ho Chi Minh City today can be solved by mobilizing people in places where there are no cases of community transmission to donate blood.

But I think, during the epidemic, we can deploy the Red Cross staff in conjunction with the Blood Donation Center to collect blood on the spot. Taking blood at home, or in the neighborhood is an appropriate solution for people and health agencies at this time.

Even if I don't have money for charity, I still have this body, I have a life given to me by my parents, I can still give it away. The drop of blood will go from the heart to the human heart.

A campaign to mobilize people to donate blood in a city of more than 9 million people is not too difficult. We have a social network to mobilize each neighborhood, commune, ward, have a mobile blood donation vehicle team, just ensure social distance and 5K. The city is too large, there are not many blood-receiving points, so people who want to give blood sometimes have to travel tens of kilometers. Taking blood on the spot helps people not to go to the streets too crowded.

For people, this is also a meaningful job in the midst of a tight knee due to the epidemic, not being able to go out much, having free time. At the same time, donating blood is also an opportunity to check your health and contribute to the long-term fight against the epidemic. It is a philanthropic act that benefits both oneself and others.

On-site blood donation will really encourage the spirit of community, like Saigon people helping each other: “donating vegetables to those in need”, “giving supplies to people in the blockade”, “accepting and transporting people to the hospital for free”. Handwritten signs have become Saigon’s identity.
