Scientists in Switzerland have discovered a monoclonal antibody that effectively neutralizes all worrisome strains of SARS-CoV-2 so far, including the Delta strain.

The antibody is one of the most potent to date against SARS-CoV-2, said a statement on the website of the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne (EPFL).

EPFL is one of two institutions participating in this study. The other institution is Switzerland’s Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV). Their research is published in the scientific journal Cell Reports.

According to the release, scientists discovered a new type of antibody in the lymphocytes (immune cells responsible for destroying virus-infected cells) of Covid-19 patients.

Dangerous R.1 mutation has spread to 35 countries

This type of antibody will bind to the mutation-free region of the spike protein, thereby preventing the spike protein of SAR-CoV-2 from binding to cells with the ACE2 receptor. The ACE2 receptor is the gateway for the corona virus to enter and infect lung cells.

This means that the antibody will block the replication of the virus, thereby helping the immune system destroy SARS-CoV-2 in the patient’s body. This defense mechanism has been demonstrated through experiments on hamsters.

With an effect of protecting patients for 4-6 months, the new antibody is considered a “concern” preventive treatment for the group of people at risk before Covid-19 but have not been vaccinated, or people cannot produce an immune response after the injection, according to the statement.

According to the statement, CHUV and EPFL intend to produce the drug containing this antibody and the clinical trial phase will begin at the end of 2022.

But this type of antibody is not intended to replace the Covid-19 vaccine, which is still the most effective way to prevent infection, the statement stressed.
