During the Qing dynasty, Ngo Doan Thang lived in Huy Chau, Steam district. When he was young, he often went back and forth to trade in 2 Chau To and Hang. One day, on the occasion of passing through Ho Khau, he happened to meet a monk who was turning into a boy. The monk pondered for a moment and then said: From now on, you should keep the precepts not to kill, release, recite the Buddha’s name and uphold the mantra of Great Compassion.

Ngo Doan Thang followed his advice, went home to recite mantras, recited Buddha’s name, and often used it to advise people. At the age of 29, he rented a boat from Hangzhou to his hometown, accompanied by 16 people. The boat went away for a few dozen miles, suddenly a strong wind and big waves arose, which was very dangerous. Doan Thang suddenly remembered what the monk said before, hurriedly clasped his hands to chant mantras and recite Buddha’s name. The moment the boat sank, all the people in it were swept away by the waves.

While in a coma, he suddenly heard a voice: Ngo Doan Thang had the merit of chanting Buddha’s name and advising people to be free from this accident! When he opened his eyes, he looked around and saw that he had been picked up by fishermen. His clothes were soaked and his shoes were washed away by the water. Only in the hand still holds the string of 18 beads that are often used for daily chanting. When asked, the other 16 people were swept away by the water without finding any trace.

From then on, he believed inconceivably the merits of reciting Buddha’s name and reciting mantras. Used to burn incense in the arm into four words ‘Western birth’. When he met anyone, he also talked about cause and effect, and advised on spiritual practice. Having earned money, he did meritorious deeds: creating statues, building temples, releasing animals, giving alms, and other good deeds.

His good name spread further and further, until in the Hangzhou region. The name Ngo Doan Thang is known to all women and children. On the first day of the fifth month, the ninth year of Dao Quang. When he died, he kept his mindfulness and clarity, saying to himself: ‘I see countless Bodhisattvas walking in front of me. After saying that, he sat still and died, that year he was 66 years old.
