The Buddha often taught about the contemplation of the five sensual pleasures, which have a sweet taste, with the characteristic of attachment and the potential for many dangers and unpredictable sufferings. Since craving for the five senses is the nature of beings in the sensual realm, it is not easy to overcome.

“Once the Buddha was wandering in the country of Savatthi, in the forest of Victory, in the garden of Solitude. At that time, the venerable Ananda was in a quiet place, sitting quietly thinking and thinking like this: ‘People in this world are rare. There are few people who can satisfy with sex; few people have repulsion and repulsion of sex to death.People in the world who have satisfaction, disgust, and fear of sex until death in this world are too hard to find. ‘.

Then the venerable Ananda, in the late afternoon, rose from his resting place, went in front of the Buddha, bowed down, then sat to one side and said:

– Bach Duc World-Honored One, today I was in a quiet place, sitting quietly thinking, thinking like this: ‘People in this world are rare, few people can be satisfied with sex; Few people have a loathing or a fear of sex until death. People in the world who have satisfaction in sex, disgust, and fear to death are really hard to find’.

Buddha said to Ananda:

– That’s right, that’s right! Real people are rare, few can satisfy with sex; Few people have a loathing or a fear of sex until death. People in the world that have satisfaction in sex, disgust, fear to death, are too hard to find.

But, Ananda, there are too many people in the world who are not satisfied with sex, are not disgusted, are afraid to death! That’s too much!”…

The harm of the five senses

Sex or the five senses (property, beauty, fame, eating, sleeping) are the things that make people fall in love, chase, and seek. It is also easy to understand because the five desires bring happiness and satisfy desires; Only those with good fortune will enjoy full, lasting, and prolific sex. For secular people, creating the five desires in a righteous way and enjoying them in moderation, moderation, and control can be considered success and happiness.

The danger is that many people seek the five desires at all costs and then have to pay the price. The harm is not realizing that the desire for the five senses is endless, has no end and that is also the cause of “the rich also cry”. Therefore, lay Buddhists who seek the five sensual pleasures must by means of right livelihood and enjoy them in moderation, and at the same time actively share can have lasting happiness. Having sex in the spirit of wanting little and knowing enough but constantly working, creating and contributing, from the Buddhist point of view, not only does not affect social development as some people mistakenly believe, but also creates support, balance, stability and sustainability.

For monastic Buddhists, the five desires are really an obstacle to liberation. Wealth, beauty, and fame are really unnecessary in the path. Some people do not ask for it, but still have it, but they only see it as a means of practicing the way and teaching, without the slightest lingering mind. As for eating and sleeping, it is necessary but just enough to live a healthy life to advance in the practice. So letting go of the five senses will help the light to bounce up and fly away into the high and wide spiritual sky. On the contrary, clinging to the five senses is stagnant, heavy, downward; there’s just something more painful than that.

The Buddha often taught about the contemplation of the five sensual pleasures, which have a sweet taste, with the characteristic of attachment and the potential for many dangers and unpredictable sufferings. Since craving for the five senses is the nature of beings in the sensual realm, it is not easy to overcome. Ordinary people, everyone dreams of possessing a lot of five desires, immersed in enjoyment and then lamented by disappointment and suffering. Extraordinary people always want little and know enough, “have a loathing, aversion to sex to death” but it is too difficult to find in life.
