The venerable monk quietly approached her with his bowl.
The old woman opened her eyes and saw in front of her a majestic and gentle ascetic. She understood what he meant and said:
– Dear Venerable! I am too poor to know what to give to you, there is no one in this country poorer than me. It has been three days since I have had anything to put in my stomach, early this morning someone went to pour rice water, I got a little bit but I did not dare to drink it because of the sour taste.
– I understand your situation and suffering, it is only because of the wastefulness in your past life that you have to suffer as poor as you are now. People can give you some food and water, but it only helps you to endure through the day, in the future you will continue to suffer. What I can do now is repent of my past karma and find ways to give, share, and make offerings. Especially arousing reverence for the Triple Gem.
The old woman suddenly understood something and looked around with emotion. Only a batch of rice water had been picked up by the roadside. The old woman looked at the Venerable again. The venerable looked at her with gentle eyes of compassion. The old woman’s hands trembled as she poured the sour rice water into his bowl. The venerable blessed her and then quietly took the bowl and left. The people around could not hold back their emotions when witnessing that scene.
A venerable great disciple of Buddha being respected by the gods and everyone else, accepted to eat a batch of sour rice water that was thrown on the roadside by an old beggar woman, with the wish that she would receive many blessings and get rid of suffering.
