This article is an attempt to identify and describe the most typical spirits of Mendicant Buddhism before integrating into the common house of the Vietnamese Buddhist Church (1981-2022) and becoming the Mendicant sect.
Those four spirits include: (1) The spirit of revival in all aspects; (2) The spirit of keeping ties intact and pure; (3) The spirit of developing and spreading the divine light; (4) The spirit of development is pervasive and committed to a good life. At the end of the article is the event of unifying Buddhism opening a new chapter. This is the event that the senior nun Huynh Lien enthusiastically and kindly calls “the lotus blooms in the lake”.
I. The spirit of multi-faceted Buddhist revival of Patriarch Minh Dang Quang
Thinking about the bhikshu’s roots and the requirements of the times
Patriarch Minh Dang Quang was born in the first half of the twentieth century. That is when the demand for Buddhist revival has matured in the sense that Buddhism has no room for further decline, no room for further regression, no other choice: Either revival or no longer exists as a true religion. Patriarch’s teaching period lasted 8 years, falling right around the middle of the twentieth century (1946-1954). This period of preaching is actually the time when the Patriarch revived Buddhism in all aspects. Buddhism includes everything that we can think of, the Patriarch revived all of them. When we think about religion, we might think of things like:
+ Doctrine: Main doctrine and frame of reference
+ The scriptures: sacred scriptures for reading, reciting and practicing according to the schedule, philosophical scriptures for reading, understanding and contemplation; canonical scriptures for enforcement and enforcement.
+ Teacher: Monastery, monastery design and management
+ Teachers: Acquiring, managing and educating personnel
+ Cultivation method, daily schedule, monthly meeting and annual festival
+ General regulations overall, more specific regulations and internal rules to realize regulations and regulations
+ Costumes, methods of creating costumes and ways to use them, including how to use or regenerate them; food, the way to get food, the way to eat food and how to deal with leftovers or leftovers.
Patriarch Minh Dang Quang revived Buddhism from the smallest and most detailed stories to the biggest and most macro stories, from tangible things such as real estate, coffee shops, and objects to metaphysical things such as: ideology, system, etc. reference, cosmology, human life…
II. The spirit of consistently preserving the purity of the tradition established by the Patriarch, typically Duc Nhi Patriarch Giac Chanh
The Patriarch died and was absent forever, the rest were the group of disciples of the Patriarch in the crisis of life and death. Although it was called the Sangha, it was actually a primitive organization if the historical length was about seven or eight years and small if the total number of monks and nuns was counted at that time. Many people thought that this organization would disband someday. However, the story turned out very differently. The Buddhist scriptures have a sentence that conveys a timeless truth: “What is the core of the tree will exist”. We can put it a little differently: What is real will exist.
What is that in fact? In fact, what will it look like when it comes out? Who is the person who lives most faithfully to that essence to the point of becoming a symbol of it?
The answer in turn will be as follows:
In fact, that is the essence of true cultivation or true cultivation in the narrowest sense of the word. That is the path of the holy life, of pure Buddhism. To put it in the words of the mountain gate, it would be: Both body and mind, both mind and nature are directed towards the ultimate goal of liberation and enlightenment, the realm of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three lifetimes.
When it comes out, it actually has a very strong emotional power. The evidence is that the Sangha Church, after the Patriarch’s absence, was temporarily wobbly, but in the end, it still existed and developed steadily. Some people are converted and become monks or nuns, others are converted and become good men and women.
The one who has the merit in keeping the lineage of the lineage is Duc Nhi Patriarch Giac Chanh. Someone has described his holy life as a star that moves across the dark night sky so that those who are fortunate enough to be able to see and just see it are peaceful and happy.
III. The spirit of diligently deploying the mendicant Buddhist relationship of the great disciples of Patriarch Minh Dang Quang, typically Dharma Master Giac Nhien and other monks leading the congregations
The Patriarch is not present, the responsibility of leading the Sangha is placed on the shoulders of the leading disciples of the Patriarch, who in the mountain gate are often called the Masters. The masters have come out of high school, the masters have properly performed their roles, preserving and developing the traditions established by the patriarchs. The Second Patriarch Giac Chanh fully embodies the image of pure holy life and the depth of the boundless spiritual realm while the masters show the role of pilgrim teachers, bringing new light and new vitality to the world. good religion to new areas, establishing new congregations to propagate the Dharma for profit. Senior nun Huynh Lien founded the Lotus Church, Dharma Master Giac Nhien and later Venerable Giac Hue founded Sangha Churches. The other masters all had great merit in spreading the religion throughout the central provinces, the coast and the highlands, the East and the Southwest, including what is now called remote areas. distant. In just about 20 years, the tireless commitment of the generation of masters has increased hundreds of viharas. Just like that, the vihara follows the vihara, the ashram follows the monastic school, parallel with the threshold of the ecclesiastical population. Mendicant Buddhism was deeply rooted and continues to be a source of holy and gentle energy, wisdom and love, to this day.
IV. The spirit of actively deploying Mendicant Buddhism in parallel with the cause of commitment to the great cause of the nation, showing boundless compassion for others and a skillful combination between living the religion and helping the world, typically the chief nun Huynh Lien
From the Patriarch’s absence until the founding of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (UBCV/Church) in 1981, the Venerable Huynh Lien is a typical example of parallel dedication to both the Dharma and the people. ethnicity. In terms of dharma, the nun wholeheartedly preserves and actively implements the mendicant relationship. The nun is a gentle and gentle nun who is still meticulous in subduing nuns and educating people, and at the same time possesses a strong enough energy in establishing a church with all the necessary institutions. a church is required in order to obtain a legitimate legal foundation. In terms of ethnicity, the Nun is a miracle.
In 2022, on the 100th anniversary of the nun’s birth, a seminar was organized and attracted more than 170 presentations, many of which were valuable discussions for the historical and social sciences. social, political, ethical and cultural. Especially vivid is the participation of those who have been born and died with the Nun, tearfully recounting the dramatic developments. face-to-face with barbed wire, batons, water cannons, tear gas; faced the immediate danger of arrest, imprisonment, torture, and imprisonment. There are people with good memories in those pieces of history, and there are people who have faded because of age . Even so, the pieces of history of that heroic past continue to move people’s hearts, awakening the heavens of those who are living in the present.
During the resistance war, the Nun openly participated in urban struggle movements in South Vietnam, on the one hand secretly supported the revolutionary forces in the inner city, contributing to the final victory. Here are some typical information extracted from the Conference Proceedings of the Venerable Huynh Lien:
+ Many members of the Youth Union operate in secret such as: Medical student Duong Van Day, Science student Le Cong Giau (secretary of the Communist Youth Union), uncle Nguyen Vinh Nghiep (leader of the secret City Party Committee) was also concealed and raised by the nun at the Vihara.
+ Ngoc Phuong Vihara has quietly become a revolutionary base, fostering cadres’ seals, and serving as a meeting place; at the same time, providing supplies, medicine, food, etc. to the Economic and Finance Department, the Southwestern Arts Department, the Inter-District 4 Security Department, the Long An Secret Zone, the War Zone D.
+ Ngoc Phuong Vihara is the basis of great financial contributions of many revolutionary units such as Gia Dinh province, Department of Economics and Finance, Zone 8 of the Southwest region, People’s Revolutionary Committee of Duyen Hai district, Youth Union of Saigon city, Thanh Hoa city. Women’s Union, Inter-District Party Committee 4, Personnel Committee K.41, K.42, K.43, from 1965-1975.
+ Mr. Ung Ngoc Ky, Vice President of the Front in 1945, affirmed that the nun was not only a “soldier” but a hero in the era…
