Although, no job is lowly when it contributes to the construction and development of society. However, in terms of work, professions such as butchers and executioners are occupations that create evil karma and have no benefit for themselves in this life and the next.
A time, World Honored One was traveling among the Kosala people and a large assembly of bhikkhus. While on the road, he saw a fisherman who, after catching fish, killed fish and was selling fish. Seeing this, the Blessed One said to the monks:
What do you think, monks, have you seen or heard the following: “A fisherman, catches fish, kills fish and is selling fish; by that kamma, by that life, or by living in the midst of great possessions?”.
No, venerable sir.
The monks, how do you think, have you seen or heard the following: “The butcher, after killing the goats, pigs, cows… wild animals, kills and then sells them; by that kamma, by that life, or by living in the midst of great possessions?”.
No, venerable sir.
Well done, bhikkhus! I also do not see, nor hear the butcher, after killing the goats, pigs, cows … enjoy, live among great possessions. Why? For the butcher kills the animals, with malice looking at the animals being killed; so he is not entitled to live among great possessions. How much more maliciously watching humans being killed, being taken to be killed. This, bhikkhus, is unhappiness, long-term suffering for him, after death he is reborn in the lower realms, in the bad destinations, and in hell.

The retribution of killing sentient beings
In life, each person has a job and a career. Although, no job is lowly when it contributes to the construction and development of society. However, in terms of operations, professions such as butchers and executioners are jobs that create evil karmathere is no benefit to oneself in this life and the next.
When killing is chosen as a profession, professional proficiency will make the act of killing more and more skillful. The higher the productivity of labor, the higher the number of sentient beings killed. The training to improve skills along with the study and research has made the killing karma more and more accumulated, smooth and heavier.
Another important thing that not many people notice is that the profession of killing creates a mentality of wanting to kill, happy to be killed, not afraid of bloodstains, carnage and death. Modern entertainment technology also contributes to poisoning people’s minds with horror movies, violent games, etc.. From that mentality, it is easy to lead people to murder without fear.
It’s time for humanity to wake up to reconsider its “self-nurturing” view. It is the brutal killing and slaughter of creatures to provide food and satisfy profit that creates ecological imbalance. At the same time, murder, the love of killing is the root cause of war, terrorism, conflict, violence and hatred around the globe.
Therefore, Buddhists do not kill, do not approve of killing, strongly oppose all acts of killing, and develop loving-kindness, protecting all life. If you have another job, don’t kill; If you are doing the killing job but you can’t retire, you must be deeply aware of the evil karma you are doing to find a way to quit. In doing so, Buddhists have lived and practiced according to Buddha’s teachings.
