When an unfortunate event happens to us, instead of embracing suffering, we should contemplate compassion to know how to love those who have caused us suffering. If we can do that, we will not hold grudges.

When someone causes us pain, instead of holding grudges, we should have compassion on them. That is the practice of compassion. Because of their ignorance, they cause us suffering and by doing that, they will certainly suffer consequences in the future. Therefore, we should love them rather than resent them. When the Buddha was still in the world, one day Phul-na came to ask the Buddha to teach in a certain country. Buddha said:

– I heard the people there are not civilized. They are very ferocious. Can you afford to go there?

Phulonga said:

– White World Religion, because the people there have not been civilized, so you must be responsible for civilizing them; Because they are fierce, I bring back the teaching of compassion to transform them.

Compassion is still a mother

Meditate on compassion to transform suffering

Buddha asked:

– But when you are preaching, people curse you?

– Venerable Sir, if they curse me, I think they are still good because they have not beaten me.

– What if they beat you?

– Venerable Sir, I think they are still good because they have not killed me.

– What if they kill you?

Phulonga said:

“World-Honored One, if that’s true, then I think my death can also touch them, because I’ve sacrificed myself for the sake of preaching the Dharma.” But, what I love most about them is that if they kill me, they will suffer painful retribution. Therefore, you must love them more.

Buddha praised:

– Good luck! He was able to succeed in educating the natives.

Thus, when an unfortunate event happens to us, instead of embracing suffering, we should contemplate compassion to feel compassion for those who have caused us suffering. If we can do that, we won’t hold grudges.
