The Buddhadharma in this world cannot be separated from the world to have enlightenment, if you separate from the world and seek enlightenment, it is no different from looking for the hair of a tortoise and a rabbit’s horn (something you can never get). That shows the close relationship between Buddhism and the world.
Many people think that Buddhism is the worldly religion, but in fact Vietnamese Buddhism is the worldly religion? Please say that being out in the world means being outstanding, transcending life, not being out in the world as many people think. Hui Neng, the sixth patriarch of the Chinese Zen School, said:
“Buddhist Dharma in the World”
Ignoring the worldly sense,
Bodhi peace and quiet
It’s like a bridge of awareness.”
That is: Buddhism in this world cannot be separated from the world but has enlightenment, if you separate from the world and seek enlightenment, it is no different than looking for the hair of a tortoise and the horns of a rabbit (something that can never be obtained). ). That shows the close relationship between Buddhism and the world.
Reading the history in general and the history of Buddhism in Vietnam, we see that, from the 13th century, the incarnation spirit of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect, founded by the First Patriarch Tran Nhan Tong, has clearly confirmed this. When it comes to Tran Nhan Tong, Vietnamese people all know that he is a heroic and loving king. Talking about him is referring to the heyday of the Tran Dynasty, referring to the master of the Truc Lam Zen sect, Yen Tu. His life is an expression of the miraculous vitality of Buddhism in all social situations. He proved by his own life through the Dharma.
Because Buddhism to him always manifests itself in all situations: Buddhism is present while on the throne, Buddhism is present in the moment of war, when oil is hot and hot, Buddhism is present in leisure time like watching the countryside afternoon (the poem Thien Truong Van Vong), Buddhism on the way to go around the village to preach the Thap Thien Sutra, Buddhism is present in all relationships between the king and me, father and son, husband and wife, brothers and sisters. . According to Tran Nhan Tong’s point of view, “Living without helping the world is a shameful thing for a man.”
Tran Nhan Tong probably influenced a lot of Zen Buddhism thought of Tue Trung Thuong Thuong because according to Tran Nhan Tong: “Zen for Thuong Thuong seems to have mixed with the world, mixed with the light, but not with the people of the world. , Sergeant always entered the ceiling – Revealed to enter the ceiling hybrid (wide step into the dusty place). For him, cultivating true nature is in mundane life, in the corner of the horizon, and he thinks that affliction, Bodhi is not different, if we give up defilements and take real Nirvana, it is no different from hiding in the sun. (first).
With the spirit of entering the world, Tran Nhan Tong always warns people not to waste time, to do something useful for religion and life. During the great meeting at the Ky Lam Institute, His Holiness called: “O people, light and sound are too fast, human life does not stop! How can you eat porridge and rice without learning about the bowl and the spoon?” Or referring to the truth of life and religion, he also has two verses as self-questioning and postpartum reminder: “All things water flows with water / One hundred years of self-questioning heart”(2).
For Tran Nhan Tong, the career he left to the world and religion is huge: There is no field where he does not shine, it is the comments and evaluations of scholars and scientists in many fields, saying such as: so about Him. Born on November 11 in the year of the Horse (1258) is the eldest son of Tran Thanh Tong and the father of Tran Anh Tong. At the age of 21, Tran Nhan Tong ascended the throne (1279). Although in the position of king, he still focused on the practice. The Nguyen – Mong invaders invaded the country, Tran Nhan Tong twice led troops to battle with Tran Hung Dao to defeat the enemy and defend the country and both times won brilliantly (1285-1288). In the year of the Snake 1293, Tran Nhan Tong ceded the throne to his son Tran Anh Tong, and he ascended to the position of Crown Prince, in this position for 6 years, he taught his descendants and arranged the ordination. So when he ceded the throne to his son, what did King Tran Nhan Tong teach him in the “Ceremony of passing the throne to Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong” in front of the court of mandarins and the people of Dai Viet.
With the spirit of the old age, this is an opportunity for us to look back at the glorious history of our ancestors in the Tran Dynasty. I think with the recent book “King Tran Nhan Tong teaches his children how to govern the country and Buddhist beliefs” by author Nguyen Nhan (Published by Hong Duc Publishing House – Vietnam Bar Association in 2017), it will be It is useful to help us visualize and understand a part of our country’s history (more than 700 years ago). With Tran Nhan Tong’s vision of the whole life and religion, so far, we look back and think it is still valid, (please summarize and quote part of the text of this enthronement ceremony in the above book by the editor). author Nguyen Nhan), in order to help readers and friends understand more deeply about a particular Zen sect unique to Vietnam:
Attendees at this ceremony include:
– The seniors in the country,
– Officials in the court and localities,
– Those who have made great contributions to the country,
– Elite citizens representing the people,
– The members of the royal family,
At the beginning, the king said: Dear old people; dear officials in the court and local; Ladies and Gentlemen, you have made great contributions to the country; Dear representatives of the people; Dear relatives in the royal family. Today, the Tran court held a ceremony to pass the throne to our son, Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong, to take over this Dai Viet nation for me.
I am King Tran Nhan Tong, ruler of Vietnam. First, to visit the health of the elderly, ladies and gentlemen, then I have a few words to teach our children:
1. How to stay hydrated
2. Worship among the people
3. Those of you attending today’s ceremony, if you have any questions, please ask
First of all, I teach Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong: Hey Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong, today is the ceremony to pass the throne on to you to lead this dear Vietnam.
– One is how to stay hydrated.
– The second is how to govern worship in the country.
Part one: Defending the Fatherland, you must thoroughly understand and strictly implement the following 6 things:
– One: You must understand that our dear Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country handed down by ancestors.
– Two: Personally, I am a king, I must be fair, righteous and love the people like myself.
– Three: Officials working in the court as well as in localities, you must organize entrance exams to select talented and virtuous people to serve the people. Absolutely do not bring relatives without any talent into the government apparatus to work.
– Four: Those who are deceitful and greedy, I do not accept to work in the government apparatus.
– Five: All people are equal.
– Six: The happiness of every citizen, absolutely children and officials must respect.
Here are 6 things you must do right.
Part two: The part of the people’s beliefs, I only recognize the righteous beliefs, and the superstitions I have to order to be abolished.
Why? Because superstition is the source that brings the nation to peril. For the most part, the big countries they used their beliefs first, then brought in the army later, so they succeeded very easily.
Father clearly taught his children: In this physical world, strange phenomena in space as well as in all things are caused by physical changes, not gods, goddesses, ghosts, and demons. . The reason those who see strange phenomena, they say and elaborate, are that they have bad intentions.
My father taught me more clearly: In this three worlds is general, and in broad terms is vast in the universe and the species on earth: Which species live according to that species. For example: Humans can’t give birth to other species, no matter what. Therefore, in other realms, they also take care of their own, but they do not come to this world to bless anyone. The superstitious part, if you don’t get rid of it, when a foreigner invades our country, these superstitious people will surely disagree with you against foreign invaders to defend the country.
Why? As the father said above, whoever wants to invade another country. First, they introduced superstition so that the people of the country they wanted to invade were no longer patriotic, but their minds, day and night, daydreaming about heaven and earth. Try to ask, how can I maintain my country Vietnam.
Father, let me make it clear to you: Before, my father was not enlightened to “The Essentials of Zen Zong” of Buddha Shakyamuni teach, the father is like many others. But now that the father has realized “The Essentials of Zen Buddhism”, he knows that all changes in matter are natural. As for the spirit, the king also understood and knew very well the following:
– About matter: On this earth, nothing stands still, but it must rotate according to the line of Citadel – Pillar – Destruction – Destruction.
– Spirituality: You must understand the following, all animals, including humans. Every species has its own characteristics, so do humans.
My father taught me clearly about human nature as follows:
1. Human nature, everyone carries a block of karma that they have created from countless previous lives up to now.
2. The four great elements form a person, must go through the physical formula of yin and yang of the parents to be born.
3. When the parents have intercourse, many “Bardo bodies” (3) come to attend and jump into the fetus to become the child of that parent. But the bardo body that borrows or pays a lot from parents is naturally absorbed by karma, and then the human mind is formed, and a human being is born.
4. In terms of spirit, which humans call mind, it is a product of new material combination.
5. On this earth, or throughout the three worlds, or in this cosmic universe, there is no powerful hand to do this.
Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong, listening to his father’s teaching, should stand up politely and ask: Dear father, where does the original thing of a person or things come from?
King Tran Nhan Tong taught Crown Prince Tran Anh Tong: Anyone who wants to answer this question, he or she must…
