According to the Blessed One, giving at the right time has five things, showing consideration and selection in the decision to give. In addition to the heart of giving, the giver should have wisdom, respect, and especially the unrelenting desire to give, even in times of poverty.

CharityMaking offerings is one of the basic and popular practices of Buddhists. However, in order for the merit of giving and making offerings to be complete and complete, the person who practices the act of giving and giving should develop wisdom and give at the right time. Give, give, give what the recipient really needs, at that moment.

Our forefathers also summed up the experience of giving at the right time by saying “A piece when hungry is equal to a packet when full”. Of course, there is blessing when giving alms, but if you know how to give at the right time, at the right time, it will be more valuable and more rewarding.

According to the Blessed One, giving at the right time has five things, showing consideration and selection in the decision to give. In addition to the heart of giving, the giver should have wisdom, respect, and especially the unrelenting desire to give, even in times of poverty.

“Once upon a time the Buddha was in the country of Savatthi, in the Kyda forest, in the Garden of Solitude. Then the Blessed One said to the bhikkhus:

Timely giving has five things: Giving alms to people from afar; almsgiving to those who are far away; almsgiving to the sick; when lacking that alms; If we get a new fruit tree, or new grain, first give it to someone who keeps the precepts diligently, and then we eat it. That is it, bhikkhu! Giving alms at the right time has these five things.

The Blessed One then said in verse:

The wise man responds to the times

Faith does not stop

Have fun here

Born in heaven, the virtues are enough.

Depending on the time, remember to give alms

Blessings like echoes

Toan was not poor

The place of birth is often rich.

Giving is enough for all happiness

To reach the supreme

Remember not to start thinking

Joy increased.

In this mind of rebirth

Total chaos no longer exists

Know that the body is at peace

The mind is immediately liberated.

So the wise

No matter male or female

Should do this test

Do not lose the correct vehicle.

Therefore, bhikkhus! If there are good men and women who want to practice these five things, remember to give gifts at any time. Thus, bhikkhus, learn this!

Then the bhikkhus, having heard the Buddha’s teaching, happily obeyed.”

Discussion:

Usually, newcomers need essential items for life, and those going far need to prepare enough luggage to go. Especially for the traveling life of monastics, this is the time when they really need the help of lay people.

For the sick, help is even more necessary. They desperately need medicine, food, care, and especially spiritual encouragement. When healthy, no matter how difficult or difficult it is, you can endure it. But when sick, the body suffers, the mind suffers, if there is no means of treatment, it is even more miserable. So all our help, from material to spiritual, means a lot to the patient.

When harvesting the crops, bring the purest first-season agricultural products to the monks to show respect or invite the villagers to use the herbs first, then use them to show their gratitude. . This is also a long-standing herbal culture in agricultural communities. This reciprocal kindness has linked the village’s friendship and peaceful and sustainable community.

Especially in difficult times like the current epidemic, but if necessary, still generate the mind to give and share in the spirit of “good leaves protect torn leaves”. This is not easy to do, but there are people who can do it. Giving in difficult times shows the strong wish of the giver, the giver’s wisdom has revealed the rise and fall of human beings, and life should be blessed with immeasurable blessings.
