The ancients often said “non-commercial, not rich”, meaning that if you don’t do business, it’s hard to get rich. However, in order to gain success and get rich righteously by trading, according to the wisdom of the World Religion, it is necessary to meet three fundamental factors: Having eyes, skillful striving, and building the foundation.

At one time, the Blessed One was staying at Baranasi, in the Deer Park, and called to the bhikkhus:

Accomplished with the three factors, bhikkhus, the merchant soon attains great and vast wealth. What is three?

Here, bhikkhus, a merchant has an eye, is skillful in striving, and has built up a foundation.

What is a merchant with eyes? Here, bhikkhus, the merchant knows the trade. This item bought like that, sold like that, will bring back such profit. What is a good trader to strive for? Here, bhikkhus, the merchant skillfully buys and sells goods.

And how is the basic building merchant? Here, bhikkhus, a merchant is known to householders or to the sons of householders, to rich men, to great money, to great fortune, as follows: This merchant is a man of sight and skill. strive, be able to support his wife and children, and often pay us interest. We give the goods to this person: Hey merchant, take this money, build a fortune to support your wife and children and usually pay us interest. Thus, bhikkhus, being a merchant builds up a foundation.

Accomplished with these three factors, bhikkhus, the merchant soon attains great and vast wealth.

Discussion:

The ancients often said “non-commercial, not rich”, meaning that if you don’t do business, it’s hard to get rich. However, in order to gain success and get rich righteously by trading, according to the wisdom of the World Religion, it is necessary to meet three fundamental factors: Having eyes, skillful striving, and building the foundation.

Having eyes, i.e. professional expertise, knows well about market demand, product characteristics and economic efficiency of deals. In addition to expertise, strategic vision, business experience and persistent striving to achieve goals (striving skillfully) also contribute significantly to business efficiency. Especially, having a reputation, ie building a foundation, in business and trading reputation is always put on top. Reputation includes corporate reputation, product quality, manufacturer’s responsibility to consumers and always ensures mutual benefits.

According to the experience of the World-Honored One, businesses and entrepreneurs who “succeed with these three factors will soon reach great and large fortune”. And this is the basic criterion for Buddhist businessmen to apply for successful business and trade, benefiting themselves and others.
