With a mind as broad and tolerant as the earth, plus constantly mindful of the body on the body, clearly knowing all the actions and gestures of the body, he certainly cannot have acts of contempt for others.

At one time, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Sāvat in the forest of Thang Lam and the garden of Solitude. At that time, venerable Sale-tzu also settled in the rainy season in Sāvaa country. After three months, after mending his robes, he folded his robes, took his bowl, and went to the Buddha, bowed his head and bowed down at the Buddha’s feet. , stepped aside and said:

– World-Honored One, I have just finished my rainy season residence in the country of Sāvat. World-Honored One, now I want to travel in the human world.

Buddha said:

“Salley-Tzu, go where you want to go. Those who have not been converted should be converted. Those who are not liberated, let them be liberated. Those who have not yet attained Nirvana, let them attain Nirvana.

Not long after the venerable Xale Tu’s departure, there was a virtuous person in front of the Buddha who violated the Dharma of the future, and he said to the Blessed One:

– Today, Venerable Xale Tu, after condescending his son, went on a journey in the human world.

Having heard that, the Blessed One said to a bhikkhu:

“Go to the place where he is, and tell him, “The Blessed One called me.

At that time, venerable Sale-tzu, having heard this, got up from his seat, went to the Buddha, bowed his head, and then retreated to one side. The Buddha then said:

“Salley, not long after the master’s departure, there was a holy man in front of me, who broke the law in relation to each other, who said this: ‘Venerable One, today, venerable Venerable Xale-tzu, after contemplating me , then travel in the world’. Is it true, Salle-Tzu, that after condescending a holy man, you go on a journey in the human world?

Venerable Xale Tu said:

“World-Honored One, like the earth, it tolerates all clean and dirty things, defecation, urination, snot, and saliva. It is not because of this that the earth begins to hate, not to be insulted, to be evil, not to be ashamed, nor to be ashamed. World-Honored One, I am the same way. My mind is like that ground, without hate, without resentment, without anger, without harm, vast and boundless, skillful in cultivation, pervading all worlds, accomplishing and abiding. World-Honored One, if someone does not have mindfulness of the body on the body, that person will despise a holy person and travel in the human world. World-Honored One, I am well-versed in mindfulness of the body, why would I despise a holy person and travel in the human world?”

In this passage, Venerable Sāriputta (Sāriputta) instead of justifying or explaining whether he is conceited or not, he simply states the fact that his mind is like the earth. The earth, which tolerates everything, whether it is clean or dirty, accepts it, and endures it without a trace of hatred. In the same way, the earth-like mind has no hatred, no resentment, no anger, and no harm, and is infinitely vast, so that no matter how good, bad, or otherwise, the mind is at peace.

With a mind as broad and tolerant as the earth, plus constantly mindful of the body on the body, clearly knowing all the actions and gestures of the body, he certainly cannot have acts of contempt for others. The beauty here is that when being criticized, Venerable Sariputra doesn’t say anything about people’s faults, but only about himself. A person when his body and mind are all clean and clear, he will definitely not fall into even the smallest mistake.

So instead of trying to show or prove that you’re a good person, train your mind to be like the ground: tolerant, accepting and tolerant of all.
